Our family adopted our tuxedo cat, Mowgli, from the Lawrence Humane Society in February of 2012. When I met him at the shelter his tag had a handwritten note that read "feral" on the cage but something about him made me stay with him for a while. I asked to see him in the visiting room and we hung out there quietly, figuring each other out. He was pretty chilled out as he criously smelled everything. I knew it sounded crazy to take a "feral" cat home but nevertheless, home he went. When we got home his "feral" nervousnes spiked. He hid in the box springs of our mattress for 2 days but after those two days of trust building, he finally came out to eat and explore.
He is now the most patient, loving cat I've ever had in my life. He lets our almost two year old sit on him. He accepts hugs and rides in the neigbor kids' arms. He begrudgingly entertains their ideas of kitty dress up. He went along with out crazy idea to temporarily home two other kitty friends and he ended up befriending them as well. He is extra snugly with me once the human kids go to bed and it's then I especially see in that smiling kitty face how happy he is.
I am grateful for a group of people in town who make it their life's work to make sure this happens for every animal and every family in Lawrence. Our family is complete with Mowgli in our lives and believe every living thing deserves that right to happiness and a full life.
As a community I hope we can give back to the Lawrence Humane Society for everything they have done and everything they will do with a new building!
Please watch their video and think about what you can do to help. Anything helps! Thank you, Lawrence!
Every pet deserves a happy, healthy life. For more than 3,800 lost and homeless animals in our community each year, that chance begins at the Lawrence Humane Society.
The Lawrence Humane Society is a critically-needed local resource for Douglas County and Lawrence, but is being held back by limitations of an aging, inadequate, and failing facility that is long overdue for replacement. By building a new, state-of-the-art shelter facility, the benefits to both pets and people are clear: more lives will be saved; the number of homeless and abandoned animals will be reduced; and most importantly, families will be strengthened -- by having the space to find the right home for every pet, and by helping keep pets and people together for the long-haul.
We need the community's help to make this project a reality.
Whether you can chip in $5 or $5,000, every dollar will make a difference to the thousands of animals that will receive care, life-saving medical treatment, and love in our new facility. Donate now or become a fundraiser to help us reach our $7.5 million fundraising goal by the end of 2017.
